How Much Data Do I Need in Cyprus? Usage by App & Trip

· 3 min read

Most people overestimate how much mobile data a holiday needs, and then pay for gigabytes they never use. Others underestimate how fast short videos and video calls eat through a plan. Here's how much each app really uses, so you can pick the right size for your trip to Cyprus.

In short: for a one- to two-week holiday with maps, WhatsApp, social media and a little video, 3–5 GB is enough for most people. For a weekend, 1 GB is usually fine. If you stream, make lots of video calls, scroll Reels/TikTok for hours or share a hotspot, plan on 10 GB or more.

How much data each app uses

These are typical figures per hour of use. Real usage depends on the app's quality setting and how much video autoplays.

Activity About this much per hour
Google Maps navigation 5 MB
WhatsApp voice call 40 MB
Music streaming (standard quality) 130 MB
Instagram, mostly photos 120 MB
WhatsApp video call 250 MB
YouTube at 480p 560 MB
Instagram Stories and Reels 600 MB
Netflix at "Medium" quality 700 MB
TikTok (default quality) 840 MB
YouTube at 720p 1.8 GB
Netflix in HD 3 GB

Sources: Netflix Help Centre for Netflix; StarHub's app data estimates for Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube; Vodafone for music. Figures are approximate.

The takeaway: maps and messaging barely register. Video is what uses data, whether it's Reels, TikTok, YouTube or a video call home.

Quick picks by trip

Your trip How you use your phone Plan size
Weekend or 3–4 days Maps, WhatsApp, a little social media 1 GB
One week Maps, messaging, an hour of social media a day 3 GB
One to two weeks As above, plus some video and the odd video call 5 GB
Two to four weeks, or heavy social media Daily Reels/TikTok, regular video calls 10 GB
Hotspot for a laptop, remote work, streaming Work calls, uploads, Netflix in the evening 20 GB
Long stay or digital nomad Daily work use over months 50 GB, 180 days

Worked example: a week in Paphos

A typical day might be 30 minutes of Google Maps, 20 minutes of WhatsApp calls, an hour of Instagram (half photos, half Reels) and a 15-minute video call home:

  • Maps: about 3 MB
  • WhatsApp voice: about 15 MB
  • Instagram: about 360 MB
  • Video call: about 65 MB

That's roughly 450 MB a day, or about 3 GB a week. Add a bit of headroom and a 5 GB plan covers it comfortably. Swap the Instagram hour for TikTok and it's closer to 6–7 GB a week.

How to make your data last longer

  1. Download Google Maps offline for Cyprus before you fly. Navigation then uses almost no data.
  2. Turn off video autoplay in Instagram, Facebook and X, and use TikTok's Data Saver mode.
  3. Download Netflix, Spotify and YouTube content on hotel Wi-Fi instead of streaming over mobile data.
  4. Stop photo backups over mobile data. iCloud Photos and Google Photos can upload gigabytes in the background. Set them to Wi-Fi only.
  5. Check app updates are set to Wi-Fi only in the App Store or Play Store settings.
  6. Keep an eye on usage. On iPhone go to Settings → Mobile Data; on Android, Settings → Network → Data usage.

FAQ

How much data do I need for a week in Cyprus?

For maps, messaging and an hour or so of social media a day, about 3 GB. If you also watch videos or make video calls, choose 5 GB. Heavy Reels, TikTok or streaming users should pick 10 GB.

Is 1 GB enough for Cyprus?

For a weekend or a few days of maps, WhatsApp and light browsing, yes. It isn't enough if you watch videos or scroll Reels and TikTok regularly, as an hour of short video can use 600–850 MB.

How much data does Google Maps use?

Very little: about 5 MB per hour of navigation. Downloading the Cyprus map for offline use before you travel brings that close to zero.

How much data does a WhatsApp video call use?

About 250 MB per hour. A voice call uses much less, about 40 MB per hour.

Can I use my phone as a hotspot in Cyprus?

Yes, our plans allow hotspot and tethering. A laptop uses data much faster than a phone, so choose 10–20 GB if you'll work from it.
