Mobile Data Not Working in Cyprus? 10 Fixes That Work

· 4 min read

You've landed at Larnaca or Paphos, the signal bars are there, but nothing loads. In almost every case it's a setting, not a fault, and it takes a couple of minutes to fix. Work through the list in order and stop when your data comes back.

Quick version: turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM, choose the eSIM as your mobile data line, then toggle Airplane Mode on and off.

1. Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM

This is the cause nine times out of ten. Travel eSIMs connect to Cyprus networks as a roaming partner, so the eSIM line needs Data Roaming switched on. It doesn't cost anything extra on a prepaid travel eSIM.

  • iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data (Cellular) → tap the eSIM line → turn on Data Roaming.
  • Samsung: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Data roaming (make sure the eSIM is the active data SIM first).
  • Google Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → choose the eSIM → turn on Roaming.

Your home SIM is the opposite: leave its data roaming off if you don't want charges from your home network.

2. Make the eSIM your mobile data line

Dual-SIM phones only use one line for data at a time. If the phone is still trying to use your home SIM, you'll either get nothing or a roaming bill.

  • iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data → choose the eSIM line.
  • Android: Settings → SIM manager (or SIMs) → Mobile data → choose the eSIM.

On iPhone, also turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching, so the phone doesn't quietly fall back to your home line.

3. Restart the connection

Toggle Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds, then off. If that doesn't help, restart the phone. After a long flight, phones sometimes hold on to the last network they saw at home.

4. Pick the network manually

In Cyprus your eSIM can use Vodafone Cyprus (it may appear as "Cytamobile-Vodafone", "CYTA" or similar) and Epic. If automatic selection gets stuck:

  • iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → the eSIM line → Network Selection → turn off Automatic and choose one of the networks.
  • Android: Settings → Mobile networks → Network operators → turn off Select automatically and choose one.

If one network doesn't connect, try the other.

5. Near the Green Line? Your phone may have jumped north

In Nicosia, and in some spots near the buffer zone, phones can pick up networks from the northern part of the island, which aren't Republic of Cyprus operators and aren't covered by Cyprus plans. If your network name looks Turkish (for example a "KKTC" network), select Vodafone or Epic manually as in step 4. If you've crossed to the north, a Cyprus eSIM won't work there. Our Northern Cyprus guide explains your options.

6. Check you still have data and days left

If your plan has run out, the connection stops even though you still see signal. Open the link in your confirmation email (or use My eSIM) to see your remaining data and expiry date. You can top up the same eSIM there, with nothing to reinstall.

7. Check the eSIM line is switched on

It sounds obvious, but after landing many people never turn the line on.

  • iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → the eSIM line → Turn On This Line.
  • Android: Settings → SIM manager → switch the eSIM on.

8. Turn off VPN, Low Data Mode and data savers

A VPN that was set up for home Wi-Fi, iPhone's Low Data Mode, or Android's Data Saver can make data look broken. Switch them off to test, then turn them back on one at a time.

9. Check the APN (Android only, rarely needed)

Travel eSIMs normally set the access point (APN) automatically. If your Android phone shows an empty APN list or a leftover APN from another SIM, open Settings → Mobile networks → Access Point Names and select the one created for the eSIM. If none exists, contact the eSIM provider for the correct APN rather than guessing one.

10. Remote areas: it may genuinely be coverage

Coverage in towns, resorts and along the motorways is good, but signal can fade in the Troodos valleys, parts of the Akamas peninsula and inside thick-walled stone buildings. Walk to an open spot or wait until you're back on a main road. Before hiking, download offline maps. See our coverage page for details.

What not to do

  • Don't delete the eSIM. Deleting it usually removes the plan for good, and it often can't be reinstalled. Turn the line off instead.
  • Be careful with "Reset Network Settings". On some phones it can also remove eSIMs. iPhones ask whether to keep them; read the prompt carefully and choose to keep your eSIM.

FAQ

Why do I have signal bars but no internet?

Signal bars show the phone can see a network, not that data is allowed. Missing Data Roaming on the eSIM line, or the wrong line selected for mobile data, are the usual reasons.

Does turning on Data Roaming cost extra with a travel eSIM?

No. Data Roaming is how a travel eSIM connects to local networks, and the data comes from the plan you already paid for. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM to avoid charges from your home network.

My eSIM worked yesterday and stopped today. What happened?

Check your remaining data and expiry date first. If you still have both, toggle Airplane Mode and try selecting Vodafone or Epic manually. If you're in Nicosia, check you haven't been switched to a northern network.

Will a Cyprus eSIM work in Northern Cyprus?

No. The north uses different mobile networks that aren't part of Republic of Cyprus plans.
