North Cyprus eSIM & Mobile Data: What Actually Works

· 4 min read

Many visitors are caught out by this: a "Cyprus" eSIM or EU roaming plan covers the Republic of Cyprus, not the north of the island. Kyrenia (Girne), Famagusta (Gazimağusa), Bellapais and northern Nicosia are served by different mobile networks. This guide explains what works there, what doesn't, and how to avoid a surprise bill.

Facts checked on 21 October 2026. Prices and plans change, so check with the provider before you buy.

The short answer

Where you are Cyprus eSIM (like ours) EU roaming from home What works
Republic of Cyprus (Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos, Ayia Napa, south Nicosia) Yes EU SIMs yes; UK depends on your network Any Cyprus eSIM or local SIM
Northern Cyprus (Kyrenia, Famagusta, north Nicosia, Ercan) No Not part of EU roaming A northern SIM or an eSIM sold specifically for Northern Cyprus
Near the Green Line in Nicosia Can switch to a northern network by accident Same risk Select Vodafone or Epic manually

Why the north is different

The Republic of Cyprus joined the EU in 2004, but EU law is suspended in the areas not under the government's effective control (Protocol 10 of the Act of Accession). That's why EU "Roam Like at Home" (Regulation (EU) 2022/612, in force until 2032) doesn't apply in the north, and why Republic of Cyprus networks don't operate there.

Two mobile networks run in Northern Cyprus:

  • KKTCELL (Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell)
  • KKTC Telsim (part of the Vodafone group)

Your phone may show either name when it picks up a northern network.

Your options in the north

1. A local northern SIM

You can buy a prepaid line from KKTCELL or KKTC Telsim at their shops in the north. Bring your original passport, because the line is registered to you. KKTCELL's own rules say tourist lines are cancelled if they aren't topped up within 60 days, so they suit a single trip. This is usually the cheapest option for a longer stay.

2. An eSIM sold specifically for Northern Cyprus

Several global eSIM sellers list a "Northern Cyprus" plan. Before you buy, check which network it uses. Some use KKTCELL directly; others rely on a Turkish network roaming in the north, which can be less reliable. A plan that only says "Cyprus" won't work in the north, and a plan for "Turkey" doesn't automatically cover the north either.

3. Day trip from the south: go offline

If you're staying in the south and crossing for a day (for example at Ledra Street in Nicosia), you may not need northern data at all:

  • Download offline maps of the area before you cross.
  • Agree a meeting point with your group in advance.
  • Use Wi-Fi in cafés and hotels in the north.
  • Keep your Cyprus eSIM for when you're back in the south.

4. Roaming from home: check the price first

Many UK networks treat Northern Cyprus as outside their Europe zone and charge a higher "rest of world" style rate. EU networks don't have to include it in Roam Like at Home either. Check your network's rate for Northern Cyprus (sometimes listed under Turkey or "rest of world") before you turn on roaming there.

Avoiding accidental roaming near the Green Line

In Nicosia and close to the buffer zone, phones in the south sometimes connect to KKTCELL or Telsim because their signal is stronger. If your home SIM does this, you could pay non-EU roaming rates without leaving the Republic. To prevent it:

  • iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → your line → Network Selection → turn off Automatic → choose Vodafone or Epic.
  • Android: Settings → Mobile networks → Network operators → turn off Select automatically → choose Vodafone or Epic.

Switch back to automatic when you leave the area.

FAQ

Does a Cyprus eSIM work in Northern Cyprus?

No. Cyprus eSIMs connect to Republic of Cyprus networks (such as Vodafone Cyprus and Epic), which don't operate in the north. You need a northern SIM or an eSIM that specifically lists Northern Cyprus.

Is Northern Cyprus included in EU roaming?

No. EU law, including Roam Like at Home, doesn't apply in the north, so EU and UK networks usually charge separate rates there.

Which mobile networks operate in Northern Cyprus?

KKTCELL (Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell) and KKTC Telsim.

Do I need a passport to buy a SIM in Northern Cyprus?

Yes, bring your original passport. Prepaid lines are registered to the buyer.

Can I use one eSIM for both sides of the island?

Not with a Cyprus-only plan. If you'll spend real time on both sides, the simplest setup is a Cyprus eSIM for the south plus a northern SIM or northern eSIM, using your phone's dual-SIM feature to switch lines.

Staying in the south? Our Cyprus eSIM plans cover the whole Republic of Cyprus on Vodafone and Epic.
